Palenque

oh folks, Palennque is everything  maya and mysterious and lush green

the pyramids are huge and in such an incrediblelocation

they had irrigation systems

we were suitably impressed and even les who was not remotely interested in anything indian, said he was glad he went.

we saw lots of indians selling their handmade wares.

we met a guy whose ancestors belonged to one of the original tribes and his granparents have been photographed and put into books.  he showed us the clothes they still ewear, made outof bark. that is a first, i had never heard of that.

the mayas were the first to make cacao into a chocolate that could be drunk. when the europeans came, it was too bitter for their palates, so the mayas incorporated milk and sugar into the drink and thus chocolate was made. the world chocolate comes from the mayan language ' choco and latl.  it was the drink only the nobility could have. it produces a physical response that makes one happy .....

loved palenque.  truly a wonderful location with water all around, jungle all around, iguanas and birds and butterflies and fruit.
